Description

Presenting a strong spread concentrated on the Y of LIBERTY, the 1942-D Mercury Dime DDO-002 offers a readily identifiable diagnostic on Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty obverse. Cross-referenced under CONECA designation 2-O-VIII, this is the second cataloged obverse variety of Class VIII tilted hub doubling for the date. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during die-making, producing displacement varying in intensity across the die surface depending on each element's distance from the tilt axis. The strong intensity on Y indicates this letter sits in the zone of maximum displacement. Die markers UVC-156 and DMR-003 identify the working die. This Denver Mint regular strike was produced during wartime in 90% silver at 2.5 grams.
