Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1941-S 1-cent WDDO-002, this Lincoln Wheat Cent variety presents its most distinctive diagnostic in an unexpected location: an extra eyelid visible below the normal eyelid on Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait. Doubled die obverses frequently manifest on lettering or numerals, making the eyelid doubling an anatomically specific feature that gives WDDO-002 a memorable attribution checkpoint. A die scratch running parallel to the rim just above IN GOD WE TRUST serves as the primary obverse die marker, providing independent confirmation of the working die beyond the doubling itself. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. The 1941-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in bronze — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — at 3.11 grams, during high wartime-era production before the composition changes of 1943. The extra eyelid is best examined under 7x to 10x magnification, where it appears as a secondary contour below Lincoln's lower eyelid.
