Marking the Pearl Harbor year, CU-1C-1941S-01R is the first cataloged rim cud for the 1941 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat cent. This was the last full year that Lincoln cents were struck in the standard 95% copper, 5% tin-zinc composition used since the denomination's 1909 introduction. The following year brought wartime demands that would soon force a dramatic composition change — the emergency 1943 steel cent — making 1941 copper cents the final representatives of the original bronze alloy before wartime disruption. San Francisco's 1941 cent production was substantial, part of the defense mobilization that preceded America's formal entry into the war after December 7th. This opening cud entry documents a die whose rim fractured during that pivotal year, leaving its characteristic raised mass on every coin struck after the separation occurred. As the 01R designation indicates, this was the first verified rim cud reported to the Cuds on Coins research team for the 1941-S date — the foundational entry upon which any future discoveries for this date and mint would build their sequential numbering.
