Description

WDDO-001 is the first documented doubled die obverse for the 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1940P-1DO-005, catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1940 1¢ WDDO-001. Strong extra thickness is present on the date and LIBERTY, with lesser thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST — a graduated doubling event in which the date and obverse legend carry the strongest spread. Multiple die markers confirm attribution on both sides. Obverse markers include diagnostic scratches and gouges in the field and on design elements. Reverse markers provide additional confirmation. A notable obverse feature references the bust to the left — an orientation landmark used in attribution. The 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint in the standard 95% copper composition. Cross-reference: Coppercoins 1940P-1DO-005; Wexler Variety ID: 1940 1¢ WDDO-001. Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouge on lower vest. Die scratch running NNW from best to left of the 1 in the date. Curving die scratch in the field to the right of the front fold of hair. Vertical die scratches behind the neck. Die scratches in front of Lincoln’s temple. Strong die scratches parallel to the rim above D in GOD. Die scratch parallel to the rim to the right of E in WE.
