Description

Notable for sharing its obverse die with two documented doubled die obverse varieties, this VarietyVista-documented 1940-D Washington Quarter displays a D/D South repunched mintmark across four stages and two die pairings. Die markers UVC-0136 / DMR-009: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die scratch from S of PLURIBUS to the wing at MDS, die crack across forehead and upper hair, and die crack across bust to queue. UVC-0134 / DMR-007: Stage C with reverse at MDS and obverse die changed at MDS; Stage D with die crack down the eagle's right wing at LDS and die crack from RIBUS to wing under AME of AMERICA. The cataloger notes that obverse Stage B is listed as DDO-008 and obverse Stages C and D are listed as DDO-006. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm at the Denver Mint, this multi-variety coin gives collectors DDO and RPM classifications from a single specimen.
