1940-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

A very close spread towards the center is visible on the date and the designer's initials of this 1940-D Mercury Dime, discovered as a combination variety pairing a doubled die obverse with a repunched mint mark. The obverse carries a die scratch running NNE from the back of the neck. The reverse is also listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-D 10c WRPM-003, making this a DDO/RPM combo die — collectors seeking either variety may find both on the same coin. Two parallel die gouges run through the top right of the U and the top left of the N in UNITED on the reverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1940-D 10c WDDO-013. The doubled die was discovered by Thomas McGowan, while the repunched mint mark was discovered by Frank Doty, Jr. Combo varieties carrying two distinct attributable errors on a single die pair are especially prized among Mercury Dime specialists, as they offer dual attribution opportunities from one coin.
