1940-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Submitted by Thomas McGowan, this replacement listing for the 1940 Denver Mint Mercury Dime WDDO-005 corrects the original entry, which proved to be a lower-grade specimen of WDDO-001. Struck in the standard 90% silver composition of pre-1965 dimes, this variety displays Class II spread towards the center on the date. Obverse die markers include a strong die gouge running through the upper NITE in UNITED. On the reverse, a short, slightly slanted die gouge appears on the base of the building to the upper left of the M in MONTICELLO. The replacement history is significant: the original WDDO-005 listing was delisted when comparison revealed it matched WDDO-001 at a lower grade, and this new entry was installed to preserve the WDDO-005 designation for a genuinely distinct die.
