1940-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1940-D Mercury Dime WDDO-007 shows Class II distorted hub doubling producing spread towards the center on the date. Class II doubling — resulting from a rotational offset between hub impressions — creates centripetal displacement where the date digits appear subtly thickened or shifted, requiring magnification and comparison to a normal example for confident identification. The obverse die marker consists of light parallel die scratches running north to south to the right of the D in GOD, while the reverse carries a distinctive SW-to-NE die scratch between the E in DIME and the adjacent star. The 1940-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design — the series would end in 1945 — and no other cross-reference systems have cataloged this variety, making the Wexler designation the sole attribution. The die markers on both sides are particularly useful for confirming this variety, as the light doubling on the date can be subtle on circulated specimens, and the die scratches provide secondary confirmation independent of the doubling itself.
