Description

A scarce pre-war Walking Liberty Half Dollar doubled die, the 1939 WDDO-001 presents Class II spread toward the center visible on the digit 3 of the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, skirt lines, the curl of the flag below the B of LIBERTY, and the star behind Liberty's head. These multiple spread zones across the obverse design provide several independent confirmation points for attribution. Obverse die markers include a light die scratch running south-southeast from the lower left of the E in WE toward the gown folds behind Liberty's leg, along with light east-west die scratches passing through WE. The reverse carries heavy die scratches running south from the upper underside of TED in UNITED, serving as a reliable reverse diagnostic. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1939 50c WDDO-001, this Philadelphia Mint half dollar demonstrates how Class II hub doubling distributes spread across multiple design elements simultaneously, creating a variety with abundant diagnostic markers.
