1939-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1939 Denver Washington Silver Quarter carries a repunched D with a mid-life obverse die crack. Die markers: UVC-0928, DMR-011. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Reverse is MDS; die crack in upper hair into field between RT of LIBERTY — MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The hair-to-field crack documents a stress fracture propagating from the high-relief hair detail outward into the flat field area between inscription letters. John Flanagan's design was struck at Denver in 90% silver, 10% copper (6.25 g, 24.3 mm). The 1939-D had a modest mintage of approximately 7.1 million pieces, one of the lower-production pre-war Denver Washington Quarters, meaning fewer RPM opportunities and smaller surviving populations for each variety.
