1939-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-003 (UVC-0104, DMR-004), this 1939-D Washington quarter shows a light spread on the lower letters of GOD, WE, and UST of TRUST. Three die stages are cataloged. Stage A records the obverse as early-mid die state, with a die crack down the eagle's right wing and a die crack running from URIBUS of PLURIBUS to the wing under E of AMERICA, both appearing at the mid-die state threshold. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, though unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, also unconfirmed. The 1939-D Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver at Denver. DDO-003 is distinguished from the stronger DDO-001 primarily by the lighter spread restricted to GOD, WE, and the final three letters of TRUST, whereas DDO-001 affects the full RTY of LIBERTY. The reverse die cracks documented in Stage A — particularly the crack running from PLURIBUS to AMERICA — provide a useful secondary marker for attribution when the obverse doubling is difficult to assess on a worn example.
