1939-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1939-D 25¢ WRPM-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4, this Washington Silver Quarter presents a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with two successive southward displacements — a relatively unusual triple application where the engraver struck the D mintmark punch three times, with each of the first two applications positioned slightly too far north, requiring corrective repositioning that left stacked traces of the earlier impressions visible below the final placement. The attribution notes indicate that the doubling closest to the bottom of the mintmark is mechanical doubling (machine doubling) rather than a true repunched impression, an important distinction for accurate attribution. Obverse die markers show no prominent features. The reverse documents extensive structural die failure: two die cracks along the contour of the right wing under ITED of UNITED, a third die crack on the right wing beginning at the I in UNITED and curving along the wing to exit near the Q in QUARTER, three short die cracks on the contour of the left wing under MERI of AMERICA, and a die crack inside under AM of AMERICA near the left wing contour running through URIBUS of PLURIBUS. This comprehensive reverse die crack network indicates the reverse die was in advanced stages of structural deterioration. The 1939-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter with the obverse based on Houdon's bust. The extensive reverse crack system spanning both wings and multiple inscriptions suggests this die was near the end of its operational life, and specimens showing the full crack development represent a later die state within this variety.
