1938-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

From the final year of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel series, this 1938-D RPM-002 was documented by VarietyVista and tracks four progressive die states. Die markers UVC-218 / DMR-003: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B with both at MDS; Stage C with both at LDS; Stage D with both at VLDS. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS indicates this die pair was maintained far beyond the typical three-stage lifecycle. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1938-D was the final Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel before the Jefferson Nickel replaced it later that year. Varieties from this terminal year hold particular collector interest as the last repunched mintmarks possible in the series.
