1937-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

A Class II spread toward the center characterizes this 1937-S Mercury Dime WDDO-003, with the doubling visible on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II and Cherrypickers FS-10-1937S-101, this variety holds recognized status in both major attribution systems. The obverse carries an extensive array of die markers: a die scratch connecting the tops of the 3 and 7 in the date, two die scratches forming a thin V to the right of the back of the neck, numerous north-northwest to south-southeast die scratches to the left of the bust, and a circular die scratch pattern on the head and to the right of the bust. The reverse places the mintmark just below the leaf. The sheer density of obverse die scratches is unusual for a Mercury Dime and provides abundant secondary diagnostics for attribution even on circulated examples where the centripetal doubling may be partially worn away.
