Description

Holding triple recognition as DDO-001, CONECA cross-reference 1-O-II-C, and Fivaz-Stanton FS-101, this 1937-S Mercury Dime represents the most significant doubled die obverse for the date-mint combination. Light spread appears on the date, the back of Liberty's winged head, and IN GOD WE TRUST on Adolph Weinman's obverse. The involvement of the back of the head — the sculptural contour behind Liberty's cap — is an unusual pickup point, as the spread follows curved relief surfaces rather than flat lettering. The CONECA notation 1-O-II-C identifies variety 1, obverse, Class II distorted hub doubling with counterclockwise spread. Die markers UVC-087 and DMR-002 confirm the working die. The FS-101 designation ensures grading service recognition and sustained collector demand. The 1937-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams during the Great Depression. Examine the date and IN GOD WE TRUST under 7x magnification, then inspect the back of Liberty's head for curved-surface doubling.
