1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Showing a close Class II spread toward center on the date, this 1937 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime was attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1937 10c WDDO-013. Discovered by Thomas McGowan, the variety belongs to a prolific date for doubled die obverses. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head, struck in 90% silver, earned the informal "Mercury" nickname despite depicting Liberty. The obverse carries die scratches running south-southwest to north-northeast right of the lower bust, scratches through IN GOD WE TRUST, and remnants of a die clash at the bridge of the nose — evidence the dies contacted without a planchet before clash marks were partially polished away. The reverse shows a die scratch through the AT in STATES and a short scratch above the M in DIME. Die clash remnants combined with hub doubling on a single die indicate this obverse experienced multiple forms of damage during its working life.
