1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II and formerly Cherrypickers FS-10-1937-101 before removal in the 6th edition, this Philadelphia Mercury dime is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1937 10¢ WDDO-001. The Class II doubled die obverse spreads toward the center on the date and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials. A nearly horizontal die scratch connects the upper T and R of TRUST, with several scratches running southwest to northeast right of the upper back of the neck. The reverse shows a die gouge dot below the fasces, a scratch through IME of DIME extending through the right star, a short gouge from the center left of the second S in STATES, and a short gouge from the upper left E in AMERICA. Mercury dimes from the late 1930s were produced in large quantities, yet this stands as the primary DDO for the date. The center-directed spread produces extra thickness rather than dramatic separation.
