1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Showing Class II spread towards the center on the date, with the displacement most evident on the upper portion of the 6, the 1937 WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Mercury dime from the Philadelphia Mint. Officially known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, this Adolph Weinman design was produced from 1916 through 1945 and remains one of the most admired coin types in American numismatics. The obverse carries two die markers: a die gouge well to the right of the bottom of the B in LIBERTY, and a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the back of the head. On the reverse, a light die scratch runs from WSW to ENE inside the O of OF, and a small die gouge sits just to the right of the center of the I in DIME. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 1937 10¢ WDDO-008, Class II doubling results from a distorted hub that produces spread converging towards the center of the design. The date doubling is the primary diagnostic, though the die markers on both sides provide essential confirmation points for attributing this variety among the numerous 1937 Philadelphia dimes that survive from a production year with ample mintage.
