1937 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
As the primary doubled die obverse for the final year of Buffalo Nickel production, this 1937 DDO-001 holds both the foundational -001 catalog position and the distinction of belonging to James Earle Fraser's last regular-issue design year before the Jefferson Nickel replaced it in 1938. Strong extra thickness appears on LIBERTY and the date, with light extra thickness on the profile of the Native American portrait. Die markers include UVC-194 and die marriage DMR-003. Stage A documents both the obverse and reverse in Early Die State, while Stage B in Mid-Die State and Stage C in Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The contrast between strong doubling on the lettering and date versus lighter doubling on the portrait suggests the hub displacement direction affected the raised design elements differently based on their position and orientation on the die face. Attributed by VarietyVista. Buffalo Nickel DDO-001 varieties from the series' terminal year attract collectors who value both die variety significance and the historical finality of the 1937 date.
