Description

Showing a D/D repunched to the northwest, this 1937-D Lincoln Wheat Cent variety was attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #3 and Wexler Variety ID 1937-D 1c WRPM-011. Repunched mint marks occurred when the mint mark punch was applied to the working die more than once at slightly different positions — before 1990, mint marks were hand-punched onto individual working dies rather than being included on the master hub, making RPMs a product of the manual punching process. On this variety, the secondary D impression is displaced to the northwest of the primary position. Obverse die markers include a curving northwest-to-southeast die scratch through the upper area of the B in LIBERTY and an east-west die scratch connecting the G and O of GOD. The reverse shows a series of short die scratches south from the E in STATES. The 1937-D was struck at the Denver Mint during the Depression Era, with a mintage of approximately 34.5 million pieces — a modest figure that reflects the economic constraints of the period. Denver had been operating as a full mint facility since 1906, processing metal from Colorado mining operations and supplementing Philadelphia's output for Western distribution.
