1937-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Eighth documented repunched mintmark for the 1937 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-008 shows a D/D South displacement where the secondary impression of the Denver mintmark is visible south of the primary punch position. The Wexler Team's attribution notes that the primary mintmark sits slightly higher and further east than WRPM-003, while the secondary impression is stronger and displaced further to the south — differentiating this from other D/D South RPMs for the same date. Lathe marks around the die near the rim, multiple in some areas and strongest at TRUST, provide additional diagnostic evidence. These concentric lathe marks are remnants of the die manufacturing process where the die blank was turned on a lathe to achieve proper dimensions before hubbing. No significant reverse die markers were visible on the circulated specimen examined. Cross-referenced with Wexler Variety ID 1937-D 1c WRPM-008, with no other attribution system references known. The 1937-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during the Great Depression era, with a mintage of approximately 50.4 million pieces — a figure that makes the 1937-D a conditionally scarce date in circulated grades. Eight RPMs documented for this date-mint combination reflects the hand-punching era's inherent variability, where each working die received its D mintmark through an individual manual punch application that could differ from die to die in position, depth, and angle.
