1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Cataloged as UVC-231, DMR-012, this 1936 San Francisco Mint Buffalo Nickel displays a repunched mintmark with traces of the initial S punch position visible alongside the final placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows the reverse in EDS while the obverse is already in LDS, an unusual pairing suggesting this obverse die had been used previously with a different reverse. Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The mismatched die states between obverse and reverse in Stage A provide insight into how the Mint paired working dies during production. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1936-S Buffalo Nickel is part of James Earle Fraser's iconic design featuring a Native American portrait on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. The Buffalo Nickel series ran from 1913 to 1938, and San Francisco issues from the later years of the series are actively collected by variety enthusiasts.
