1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Displaying an S/S Northwest repunched mintmark, this 1936-S Buffalo Nickel RPM-003 records a displacement toward the upper left of the original impression. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-187 and DMR-004, the variety resulted from the hand-punching process at San Francisco, where the initial S impression was followed by a corrective punch landing northwest of the first position. James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, was nearing the end of its twenty-five-year run by 1936. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C (LDS). The 1936-S mintage was relatively modest, making die varieties from this date less frequently encountered than those from higher-production years. As RPM-003, this is the third most prominent repunched mintmark for the date. The northwest displacement distinguishes it from other 1936-S RPMs with different orientations, providing clear diagnostic criteria for attribution.
