1936-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Holding the primary designation for the 1936-S Buffalo Nickel, this Class VI doubled die obverse displays extra thickness on LIBERTY with some spread on the date. Class VI distended hub doubling results from excessive die metal flow during hubbing, producing thickened elements rather than the separated images typical of other classes. Obverse markers include a short horizontal die gouge between the upper portions of the 3 and 6, and a short vertical die scratch below the upper feather. The reverse carries a short, slightly slanted die gouge above the first S of STATES. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1936-S 5-cent WDDO-001. The 1936-S was struck at San Francisco during the final years of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, replaced by the Jefferson design in 1938. As the lead doubled die obverse for this date and mint, WDDO-001 represents the most significant hub doubling on the 1936 San Francisco issue.
