Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint in the penultimate year of Fraser's Buffalo Nickel series, this RPM-009 shows an S/S/S North, North triple-punched mintmark beneath FIVE CENTS. Die markers: UVC-233, DMR-010. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Light die dent from buffalo's head, small die scratch under LIB of LIBERTY — MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista. Triple-punched mintmarks on Buffalo Nickels document at least three separate punch contacts, with each successive northward shift leaving overlapping remnants at the S curves. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 g, 21.21 mm diameter. The 1936-S had approximately 14.9 million pieces struck before the series ended in 1938.
