1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged as UVC-189 with die marriage DMR-006, this 1936 San Francisco Buffalo Nickel documents the fifth repunched mintmark attributed for the S-mint issue of that year. San Francisco struck 14.93 million Buffalo Nickels in 1936, a healthy production figure that generated sufficient working dies for multiple mintmark varieties to emerge. The hand-punching process used to apply the S mintmark to individual working dies was inherently imprecise, and RPM-005 preserves evidence of that manual technique. By 1936, Fraser's Buffalo Nickel was approaching the end of its run, with San Francisco producing its final Buffalo Nickels in 1937. The Type 2 reverse, featuring the bison standing on a flat, recessed plain, had been the standard design since partway through 1913. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, the alloy provided a hard striking surface that retained mintmark details well. RPM-005 adds to the catalog of S-mint varieties that variety collectors seek when assembling comprehensive Buffalo Nickel collections organized by die characteristics.
