1936 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
A spread towards the center visible on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the branches marks the primary doubled die reverse for the 1936 Philadelphia Mint Washington Silver Quarter, attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as both CONECA 1-R-VI and Wexler Variety ID 1936 25c WDDR-001. Die markers include an east-west die crack running through the upper hair on the obverse, a die crack across the base of the bust, and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. The convergence of three die cracks with the doubled die makes this a particularly well-characterized variety for attribution purposes. The 1936 Washington Quarter was produced during the Depression Era, when John Flanagan's design was only four years into its run — the series having replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter in 1932. Philadelphia struck approximately 41 million quarters in 1936, a recovery from the drastically reduced mintages of 1932-1933. As WDDR-001, this is the primary doubled die reverse for the date, and the CONECA cross-reference (1-R-VI) places it within the standardized classification system used by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America. The centripetal spread pattern — towards the center — indicates a specific hub rotation during the hubbing process.
