1936 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Fourth documented doubled die reverse for the 1936 Washington Quarter, DDR-004 shows extra thickness on multiple design elements resulting from hub doubling during the die-making process. Die markers are cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0051 DMR-012 across three documented stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed) on both sides, and Stage C featuring a die crack in the hair and across the bust at late die state with the reverse also at late die state. The progressive die crack that develops through the hair and across the bust in Stage C provides a definitive late die state marker and serves as an independent attribution point for confirming the die identity beyond the doubling pattern. John Flanagan’s Washington Quarter design was in only its fourth year of production in 1936, still relatively new, and doubled die varieties from these early years of the series document the Mint’s hubbing practices during the initial period of Washington Quarter die production when the relatively high-relief design was still being refined for mass production.
