1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015

Description

Fifteenth documented doubled die obverse for the 1936 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime — properly the Winged Liberty Head, designed by Adolph Weinman — this variety displays strong extra thickness on the date, designer's initials, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1936 10c WDDO-015, the die markers include a die crack running from the rim to the left of T in LIBERTY and continuing into the wing on Liberty's bonnet — the winged Phrygian cap that gives the coin its popular Mercury nickname. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits to the right of E in ONE, providing a secondary attribution marker. The strong extra thickness across date, initials, and motto represents substantial hub displacement during die preparation, creating a variety more readily detectable than many subtle DDOs. Fifteen documented DDOs for a single date demonstrates the systematic examination these coins have received from variety researchers over decades of study.
