1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Fourth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1936 Mercury Dime, WDDO-004 presents a close spread towards center on the date, with die markers including a die crack from the rim at 12 o'clock into the head and many short die scratches throughout the reverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team with no known cross-references, the centripetal date spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted inward relative to the first, creating doubled contours best visible on the date numerals. The die crack from the rim into Weinman's Winged Liberty head provides an additional attribution point, while the numerous reverse die scratches suggest extensive finishing work or surface deterioration during the die's service life. Weinman's "Winged Liberty Head" design, commonly called the Mercury Dime despite depicting Liberty in a winged Phrygian cap symbolizing freedom of thought, ran from 1916 to 1945 and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful small-denomination coins ever struck. The 1936 was produced at Philadelphia in 90% silver at 17.9mm. Examine the date for close centripetal spread, the 12 o'clock area for the die crack into the head, and the reverse for die scratches.
