1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Extremely strong Class VI extra thickness is visible on LIBERTY and the date of this 1936 Buffalo Nickel, making WDDO-001 one of the more prominent doubled die obverses in the series. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety is cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI and Cherrypickers FS-05-1936-101 (018.7). Three obverse die stages have been documented: Stage A shows no significant die markers; Stage B exhibits die scratches extending from the third feather; and Stage C displays a strong die clash below the chin. The reverse progresses through corresponding stages with no notable markers at Stages A and B, and none at Stage C. Class VI doubling results from extra thickness imparted to design elements during the hubbing process, and on this variety the effect is strong enough to be visible without magnification on well-preserved specimens. The 1936 Buffalo Nickel was struck at Philadelphia during the penultimate year of James Earle Fraser's iconic design, which ended regular production in 1938.
