1936 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

One of the most dramatic doubled die reverses in the Buffalo Nickel series, the 1936 WDDR-001 exhibits extremely strong Class II separation lines combined with Class VI extra thickness on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS, the rear legs, and the horn. The doubling reaches extraordinary intensity: USA shows at least tripling while FIVE CENTS displays quadrupling, indicating multiple hub impressions that left progressively offset images. This combination of two doubling classes — Class II distorted hub and Class VI extra thickness — in a single die is unusual and creates a visually compelling variety. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1936 5¢ WDDR-001, the variety is also cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II+VI and Cherrypickers FS-05-1936-801 (018.8), placing it in all three major die variety reference systems. A reverse die crack running through the top of NITED in UNITED to the first S in STATES serves as a secondary marker. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The Cherrypickers listing confirms this variety's status as significant enough to warrant inclusion in the standard cherry-picking guide used by variety specialists.
