1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Sharing the same affected elements as DDO-001 — strong spread on the date, designer's initials AW, and IN GOD WE TRUST — DDO-003 on the 1936 Philadelphia Mercury Dime results from an entirely different doubling mechanism. Cross-referenced as 3-O-II-C in CONECA — variety 3, obverse, Class II distorted hub doubling with counterclockwise displacement — this variety stems from lateral offset between hub impressions rather than the rotational hubbing that created DDO-001's Class I clockwise spread. The distinction is diagnostically critical: Class I produces curved displacement paths increasing with distance from the rotation axis, while Class II produces uniform linear shift affecting all elements equally. Under magnification, DDO-001's doubling follows a slight arc, whereas DDO-003's displacement runs in a consistent straight-line direction. Die markers UVC-236 and DMR-006 distinguish this working die from DDO-001's UVC-069/DMR-004. The 1936 Mercury Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams. Compare the directional geometry under 7x magnification — linear and uniform confirms Class II DDO-003; curved and graduated confirms Class I DDO-001.
