Description
The 1936-D San Diego Half Dollar WDDO-001, attributed by the Wexler team, is a doubled die obverse variety on one of the most collected classic commemorative silver half dollars. Obverse die markers include many die scratches running through HALF DOLLAR. The reverse carries a diagnostic die scratch connecting the C in PACIFIC to the INT in INTERNATIONAL. The 1936 California Pacific International Exposition Commemorative Half Dollar was issued to mark the world's fair held in Balboa Park, San Diego, and is cataloged as a classic commemorative in the tradition of the U.S. commemorative series that ran from 1892 to 1954. San Diego issues were produced at the Denver Mint (D mintmark) in 1936 alongside a San Francisco-mint companion, and both are 90% silver. The obverse features Franciscan friar Junipero Serra alongside a California grizzly bear. Wexler Variety ID: 1936-D 50¢ CA Pac Int'l Expo WDDO-001.
