1936-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1936-D 10c WDDO-002, this Mercury dime variety shows a spread towards the center on the date. Two die gouges define the obverse markers: one at the center of the top of the neck, and a second to the right of the E in LIBERTY. The reverse of this die also qualifies as a repunched mint mark variety, listed as 1936-D 10c WRPM-009, a D/D East repunching. Additional reverse markers include a short die scratch connecting the upper N and I in UNITED, and SW/NE die scratches running through the E in AMERICA. The Mercury dime — formally the Winged Liberty Head dime — was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and struck in 90% silver from 1916 through 1945. Doubled die obverse varieties on pre-war Mercury dimes attract steady collector interest, particularly when the variety also carries a reverse RPM on the same die. Identifying WDDO-002 requires confirming both the date spread and the die gouge markers, then cross-referencing the reverse for the East repunching of WRPM-009 to confirm the complete die pairing. The combination of a DDO and an RPM on a single working die pair is a particularly notable find for variety collectors. Reverse: None significant.Submitted By: Thomas McGowanCross References: None known Obverse: A die gouge can be found on the center of the top of the neck.
