1936-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

The 1936-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006 is a D/D North variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent, where the Denver mintmark was punched into the working die, then repunched in a position shifted north of the initial impression. Repunched mintmarks were routine during this era when each working die received its mintmark individually by hand, and slight variations between the first and corrective punch created the overlapping images variety collectors prize. This die carries extensive diagnostic markers on both sides. On the obverse, north-south die scratches run through the date, northeast-southwest die scratches cross the vest, short die scratches extend south from the nose, and a heavy die gouge projects northwest from the upper left E in WE. On the reverse, a north-south die scratch passes through the lower right area of the A in STATES, and north-south die scratches appear inside the C in AMERICA. These multiple markers make WRPM-006 highly attributable even when the repunched mintmark itself shows wear. The 1936-D was struck at Denver in the standard 95% copper composition.
