1936-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

D/D North repunched mintmark on the 1936 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent, cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #3 and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1936-D 1¢ WRPM-005. Extensive die markers document this variety: the obverse shows WNW/ESE die scratches from the upper left side of the D in GOD to the rim and through the O in GOD. Reverse markers include a die scratch running SSW to NNE between the R and I in AMERICA, a NNW die scratch from the left center of the right wheat ear, light die scratches running mostly north from the inside bottom of the O in ONE, and inverted V-shaped die scratches between the upper A and T in STATES with a vertical die scratch inside the C of AMERICA. The northward displacement indicates the initial mintmark punch struck slightly north of target before correction. Denver produced 40.62 million cents in 1936, and the manual punch application method guaranteed that some percentage of dies would carry visible evidence of repositioning — a process captured permanently in the working die surface.
