1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1071, DMR-005, this 1936 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the D/D positioned to the North. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The D/D North repunch direction indicates the initial D punch landed slightly south of the intended position before the corrected punch was applied. Struck in 95% copper at the Denver Mint, the 1936-D Wheat Cent comes from a year of expanding mintages as the economy continued its Depression-era recovery. The hand-punching method for applying mint marks to working dies at branch mints meant that each die potentially received a unique placement, making repunched mintmark varieties a natural byproduct of the manufacturing process. RPM-003 is among five cataloged repunched mintmark varieties for the 1936-D date, and the northward repunch direction distinguishes it from other RPMs on this issue.
