Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Exhibiting strong quadrupled Class II spread toward the center on LIBERTY, HALF DOLLAR, and EVREKA (the California state motto), this first Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse for the 1936-D Arkansas Centennial commemorative half dollar is cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II. Class II distorted hub doubling occurs when the hub deforms slightly between impressions, creating a spread pattern that converges toward the center of the die rather than radiating outward. The quadrupled aspect — four overlapping impressions rather than the usual two — makes this an exceptionally dramatic example of hub doubling, with the multiple images stacked on LIBERTY and the EVREKA motto producing visible separation under modest magnification. No significant obverse or reverse die markers have been noted. The 1936-D Arkansas Centennial commemorative was struck at the Denver Mint as part of the Classic Silver Commemorative series (1892-1954), a period when Congress authorized special half dollars to commemorate state centennials, expositions, and historical events. The Arkansas Centennial was one of the most prolifically issued commemoratives, produced across multiple dates and mints, and its detailed design provided opportunities for die varieties that went largely undocumented until modern attribution services began systematic examination. WDDO-001 stands as the primary doubled die for this issue.
