1935-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1935-S Buffalo Nickel WDDO-001 displays Class VI extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date. Class VI doubling — distorted die doubling — produces subtle thickening of design elements rather than the clear separation associated with stronger doubling classes, requiring careful comparison against normal examples for detection. A notable aspect of this variety is that the reverse die is identified as a late die state of the 1935-S WRPM-001 — a repunched mint mark variety — creating a dual-interest coin where the obverse carries doubled die characteristics and the reverse shows repunched mint mark evidence in advanced die deterioration. No specific obverse die markers have been noted, while the reverse die shows the wear patterns associated with extended use beyond the WRPM-001 stage. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-VI, the 1935-S is one of the final San Francisco Mint issues of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, adding late-series significance to this dual-variety die marriage.
