Description

Listed as DDR-002 of the 1935-S Buffalo Nickel, this doubled die reverse shows light spread on the right side of IVE of FIVE and inside the U of UNITED, where the denomination and country inscription received faint secondary impressions from hub displacement during die preparation. The 1935-S is a lower-mintage date in the Buffalo Nickel series, adding scarcity appeal to the variety. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-152 and DMR-003, three progressive stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state, Stage B at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state, all currently unconfirmed pending examination of additional specimens. The light spread on IVE targets the final three letters of FIVE, where the secondary impression creates subtle extra thickness along the right edges of these letters. James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel design, produced from 1913 through 1938, features a standing bison on the reverse where the FIVE CENTS denomination appears beneath the animal. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the San Francisco Mint, this lower-mintage Buffalo Nickel documents subtle reverse hub doubling affecting the denomination and national inscription.
