Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with a discovery date of June 8, 2020, the PC-1c-1935-08 is the eighth documented pre-cud on the 1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent from the Philadelphia Mint. Pre-cuds represent the initial stage of rim die failure — visible cracks that have developed at the die's edge but have not yet progressed to the point where a fragment separates to form a retained cud or full cud. These hairline rim cracks appear on struck coins as fine raised lines at the rim, and their presence indicates the die was approaching a critical failure threshold when the coin was struck. Eight documented pre-cuds for the 1935 Philadelphia Mint date indicates moderate die failure activity, consistent with the era's high-volume production.
