Description

Second cataloged cud for the 1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break documents a complete rim fracture on a coin struck during the mid-Depression era. The 1935 Philadelphia Mint cent had a mintage of approximately 245 million — significantly higher than the severely depressed totals of the early 1930s, reflecting a partial economic recovery. CU-1C-1935-02 in the Cuds on Coins system records the second distinct die that developed a full rim separation for this date, where the broken fragment created a cavity that filled with metal during striking to produce the characteristic raised featureless mass. Die rim fractures on Depression-era cents follow the same metallurgical progression as any other date: cyclic stress from repeated striking concentrates at the rim, initiating a crack that propagates through the die steel until separation occurs. The 1935 cent was struck in the standard 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc bronze composition that had been used since 1909 and would continue through 1942. Two documented cuds for 1935 is a modest count consistent with a mid-range mintage — higher than the scarce early 1930s dates but well below the wartime volumes that generated dozens of cuds per year.
