Description

Twelfth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1934 Washington Quarter, DDO-012 presents a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the letters LIBE of LIBERTY, paired with the Medium Motto obverse die variety (ODV-002). VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-0460 and DMR-018, with three documented die stages: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Medium Motto designation refers to the relative size and positioning of the motto text compared to Large and Small Motto variants used across 1934 dies. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter was in only its second year of production — the design had debuted in 1932, and no quarters were struck in 1933, making 1934 an early and significant date for variety collectors. The light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBE resulted from a secondary hub impression that shifted slightly during die sinking, producing subtle doubled outlines on the affected letters.
