1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Paired with the Light Motto obverse die variety (ODV-001), the 1934 Washington Quarter DDO-011 shows strong eastward hub doubling spread on the upper portion of the R in LIBERTY — the letter closest to Washington's profile truncation on John Flanagan's obverse design. The Light Motto (also called Weak Motto) designation indicates that IN GOD WE TRUST was impressed less deeply into this die, a characteristic of certain early 1934 working dies where the motto was added to the master die at a late stage and transferred with reduced depth. Die markers UVC-0459 and DMR-017 track this variety through three documented stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse reach mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The 1934 Washington Quarter is only the second year of the series (introduced in 1932 to commemorate Washington's bicentennial), struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams at the Philadelphia Mint.
