Description

The 1934 Washington Quarter DDR-003 displays light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR — subtle reverse doubling on the second year of John Flanagan's design that would continue largely unchanged for decades. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-018 with die marriage DMR-003, this variety appears in EDS (unconfirmed), MDS on both obverse and reverse, and LDS (unconfirmed). The obverse is listed as ODV-001, the Light Motto variant — a recognized obverse die variety where IN GOD WE TRUST appears with lighter-than-normal relief. Early Washington Quarter varieties from the 1930s are less extensively cataloged than those from more recent decades, making discoveries from this period valuable for documenting die manufacturing practices at the Philadelphia Mint during the Depression era. The Light Motto designation adds a secondary collecting dimension to this variety beyond the reverse doubling itself.
