Description

Second in the repunched mintmark census for the 1934-D Mercury dime, RPM-002 shows the D mintmark punched over a previous D displaced to the northwest — a directional notation abbreviated as D/D Northwest that tells the collector exactly where to look for the remnant of the initial impression. Adolph A. Weinman's "Winged Liberty Head" design, commonly called the Mercury dime, was produced from 1916 through 1945, and the 1934-D issue saw Denver strike approximately 6.77 million pieces, a modest Depression-era mintage that kept production volumes well below the peaks of the late 1920s. During this period, individual mintmarks were hand-punched into each working die at the Philadelphia Mint before the dies were shipped to branch facilities, meaning every D mintmark on a 1934 Denver dime was placed by a human operator wielding a steel punch and mallet. When the first impression landed slightly off target, the operator repositioned the punch and struck again, creating the overlapping images that define a repunched mintmark. The northwest displacement on RPM-002 means the initial D sits above and to the left of the corrected final position, so collectors examining the mintmark area on the reverse — located just to the right of the E in ONE on the fasces design — should look for remnant serifs or crossbar segments protruding from the upper-left quadrant of the primary D. Magnification of 10-20x with angled lighting is typically sufficient to resolve the secondary impression against the primary.
