1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Carrying both the primary RPM designation and the coveted FS-501 cross-reference in the Fivaz-Stanton system, the 1934-D Mercury dime RPM-001 represents the most significant repunched mintmark variety for this date. The D/D North displacement indicates the initial D punch was placed too low and the corrective punch was applied in a higher (northward) final position, with diagnostic evidence of the first impression visible below the accepted mintmark. Denver produced approximately 6.77 million Mercury dimes in 1934, one of the lower Depression-era mintages that makes this date scarce in higher grades and adds collector premium to any attributable variety. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime had been in production for eighteen years by 1934, and the reverse mintmark area to the right of the fasces continued to receive its hand-punched D through the same manual process that had generated repunched mintmarks since the Denver Mint began striking dimes of this type. The FS-501 listing confirms inclusion in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the reference work that has done more to popularize variety collecting among mainstream numismatists than any other single publication. As the sole variety carrying both the RPM-001 and FS-501 designations for the 1934-D date, this repunched mintmark occupies the highest priority position for cherrypickers examining this issue. Collectors should direct examination at the D mintmark under 10-15x magnification, focusing below the final D position where the initial lower punch left its residual impression. The northward correction created an overlap where the upper portions of the two D images align more closely while the lower portions diverge, and the FS-501 listing provides published reference photographs for definitive comparison. The relatively low 1934-D mintage means fewer raw coins are available for searching, but confirmed specimens command variety premiums above the base coin value.
