1934-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Carrying the primary doubled die reverse designation for the 1934 Denver Mint Mercury Dime, DDR-001 displays medium spread distributed across four separate reverse design areas: UNITED STATES OF, ONE, the left star, and the left outer leaves of the olive branch. Robert Lawson reported this variety. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury Dime reverse — more formally the Winged Liberty Head design (1916-1945) — features a Roman fasces bound with an olive branch, flanked by decorative elements that include stars and leafy sprays. The spread's concentration on the left side of the die (left star, left outer leaves) combined with the left-positioned text (UNITED STATES OF, ONE) suggests the hub displacement direction aligned primarily with the left quadrant of the reverse, producing its strongest visible effect on features in that zone. Medium intensity across four areas simultaneously indicates a displacement magnitude large enough to create clearly discernible secondary images at moderate magnification on multiple features. The 1934-D Mercury Dime was struck in 90% silver at 2.5 grams at the Denver Mint, with Weinman's AW initials on the obverse at the base of Liberty's neck. As DDR-001, this variety represents the most significant documented reverse hub doubling for the 1934-D issue, and the four-area distribution provides abundant diagnostic checkpoints for authentication.
