1934-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-01-1934D-101, this 1934-D Lincoln Wheat Cent carries one of the most dramatic doubled die obverses for Depression-era Denver issues. The doubling is Class VI (extra thickness), appearing extremely strong on the date and LIBERTY with lesser effect on IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI and Coppercoins 1934D-1DO-001, the variety is documented across multiple attribution services. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at the Denver Mint during a year when mintages remained suppressed by the Depression. The obverse die carries a strong die crack down inside the upper front fold of Lincoln's vest, while the reverse shows a small die gouge to the right of the bottom horizontal bar of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent design was approaching its twenty-fifth anniversary when this doubled die was created.
